Semakau Island might be a landfill, but it’s no ordinary dump. Opened in 1999, it’s the world’s first offshore landfill—built between Pulau Semakau and Pulau Sakeng with a rock wall enclosing part of the sea to hold incinerated waste. Here’s the twist: it’s amazingly clean. So clean, in fact, that people go there for nature walks, birdwatching, and even stargazing. Thanks to NEA and nature groups, the surrounding mangroves, coral reefs, and marine life have been carefully preserved. Semakau proves that smart waste management and environmental care can go hand in hand. It’s a landfill—but make it eco-friendly.

Right after gaining independence in 1965, Singapore got to work building its first major expressway, the Pan-Island Expressway, or PIE. Construction began in 1966, and by 1969, cars were already cruising on it. Stretching from Tuas to Changi, the PIE connected east to west, becoming a vital backbone for Singapore’s growth and economy. Today, it’s still the longest and busiest expressway in the country, a true highway icon. Tucked away in Hougang, Kampong Lorong Buangkok is Singapore’s last surviving mainland kampung, a living time capsule in the middle of modern life. Built in 1956 on former swampland, it’s home to around 20 families today, still holding onto zinc roofs, muddy paths, and kampung spirit. Once nicknamed Kampong Selak Kain for its flood-prone grounds, it now stands as a rare, living glimpse of old Singapore, though its future remains uncertain.
