Post-Love

Post-Love explores the taboo of elderly romance and sexuality in Singapore, where traditional Chinese mindsets still hold fort over the older generation. Confessional interviews with old men and women are amplified via performative, fictional elements which challenge the documentary tradition. Nostalgic re-enactments harken to an era past, the anthropomorphic Goddess of Disinhibition vies for the attention of the viewer, and a slew of almost Brechtian composite fictional characters add colour and depth. Love, the difference between men and women, money, time—these enduring themes are all visited, from the elderly’s point of view. A perspective seldom sought, but who would know better than they who have been through life? Dug from the depths of the memories of the old are recollections of a first date, failed marriages, continuing male desire for “fresh meat”, aversions to romance for fear of shame and uniquely Singaporean sexual analogies. These all come together to form a beautiful kaleidoscope of the unspoken thoughts and broken dreams of a generation who has reached the age at which its needs and wants are forgotten.
