Whisper To God
1942. The height of the Japanese Occupation in Malaya.
Gunshots. Fire. Screaming in the distance.A young girl, Mariam, runs through a thick jungle, but then slips and falls. As she picks herself up, she is shocked to have stumbled upon a dying man, Ismail. Ismail is fatally wounded and Mariam tends to his wounds. Ismail is in a state of deliriousness. He tells of how soldiers pillaged his village and killed his younger sister. He has lost faith in all of humanity and religion. Denouncing God, Ismail talks of his resentment towards life and hope. Mariam empathises with him but slowly tries to convince him of the beautiful things in life and the afterlife. As he lays dying, Mariam cares for him, assuring him that he must not leave this world with resentment. After Ismail passes, Mariam recites a little prayer for him then covers his face with her scarf.
