Gokanosho: Lost in Time

The people of Gokanosho, a collection of villages in rural Japan, are concerned that the region is disappearing. Forty-five per cent of the population is over sixty years old, and the younger generation can’t help but yearn to be swept up in the modern age and culture. Many of the children find themselves moving away to bigger cities, leaving their parents behind in Gokanosho.

This documentary is a fascinating spectacle of beautiful imagery of the region, combined with the unsettling thought it may cease to exist in the near future. Though the road ahead appears bleak, and despite Hashizaki Schingo’s heartbreaking past; his passion for the region is now providing hope for the people of Gokanosho, his newborn baby currently being the newest and youngest person in the region. This documentary hopes to capture the heart of Gokanohso so that its beauty and “warmth” can be experienced and cherished by others for many generations to come.
