A Life Forgotten

The Orang Laut Seletar were once a proud tribe, roaming freely in the straits between Malaysia and Singapore. Living on boats, they only step on land to bury the dead.

Since giving up their seafaring ways to relocate to land, the Orang Laut have seen their traditions and culture slowly fading with the passing of time.

Developments along the coast of Johor has severely diminished the sea life and they struggle to catch enough to feed themselves. The Orang Laut fears for the future.

The sea is what the Orang Laut knows and they are reluctant to leave it and work on land. Fighting to hold on to the familiar, this documentary shows their plight from an Orang Laut’s perspective.
