Vanishing Trades

Wah Keow Hair Salon (華僑理发院), established in 1954, has been serving the people in Joo Chiat, Singapore for 59 years.

Passed down by their father in the 1970s, the 2 brothers have maintain this family run business until now. The hair salon business has always been very competitive, and due to rising rental cost, the half a century old hair salon will suffer the same fate as many traditional trades that are fast disappearing in Singapore.

From photography, films and other mediums to outreach programmes and exhibitions, we can all generate awareness to prevent the lost and to preserve Singapore's rich and traditional cultures from our fast changing world.

This is a story of Wah Keow (華僑).
